The Benefits of Organic Foods

April 18, 2017

It seems like everytime you turn around someone is touting the benefits of eating an organic diet. The organic food movement has gained a lot of steam in recent years, as people are looking for ways to be healthier, happier, and better stewards of the environment. But it can sometimes be difficult to tell what is fact from fiction. Check out this handy guide to the benefits of organic food so you can choose if an organic diet is right for you.

What is Organic Food?

Organic food, by definition, is food that is grown without the use of chemical herbicides or pesticides and do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In the case of organic meats and animal products, the animals are raised “organically” when they are not given any additional antibiotics or growth hormones, and are given access to the outdoors.

What are the Health Benefits?

There are many different health benefits to switching to an organic diet, including:

  • Pesticide Reduction: Because pesticides aren’t used to grow organic produce, there won’t be any harmful residue left on your food when it gets to you.
  • Healthier Meats and Dairy: Animals raised organically aren’t subjected to antibiotics or growth hormones. Also, animals that are raised cage-free and free-range have more room to exercise, and are healthier.
  • Antioxidants: Consuming organic produce can increase your overall antioxidant intake by 20 percent.

What are the Environmental Benefits?

When you make a choice to eat organic foods, you support farmers who choose organic practices. This, in turn, helps the environment. Organic farming reduces pesticide and growth hormone use, which also reduces the amount of excess chemicals in the soil and the water. Organic farming is also better for wildlife around farms, like birds and deer, who might eat from the farm.

Should Restaurants Use Organic Foods?

Organic food is catching on in homes and supermarkets, and it is beginning to take hold in restaurants too. Restaurants can make a large impact in their communities by serving organic food, and pass along the benefits with every plate. When a restaurant chooses organic, they are choosing to provide their customers with healthy, environmentally beneficial food choices.
